GO Transit changes

Visit the GO Transit website to get information on  changes to service.  Work has started on the expansion of the Meadowvale GO Station parking lot.  It will be completed by fall.

Safe Driving Committee

I continue to sit on the Mississauga Safe Driving committee to design and implement an ongoing road safety strategy.  The committee involves businesses, agencies and citizens.  One facet of the program was the installation of "red-light cameras" at specific high-concern intersections.  Pilot locations have been in operation since November 2000 and have proven to be successful in reducing fatalities at these locations.   We have also expanded the Neighbourhood Speed Watch.  and Council approved our request for funds to purchase one unit for each ward in the City.  These will be mainly used in  school zones but can be located on other residential streets.  Radar sensors and displays on local roads show motorists if they are traveling too fast. This has been effective in several neighbourhoods and I am pleased my suggestion to expand the program was approved.

The committee has also initiated several successful programs for Mississauga, such as Road Watch, CrossWatch,  and the Community Safety Zones as well as our 2008 Pedestrian Safety Campaign.  We also produced the Mississauga Traffic and Road handbook which all residents received in 2007.

Road Watch

This program, which was first implemented in Caledon, has since spread across the province in smaller municipalities.  In May 1999 Mississauga was  the first major municipality to adopt the program.  It relies on citizens reporting dangerous driving and the Peel Regional Police will follow up on the report.  The program has been very successful in reducing driving fatalities in the communities in which it has been implemented.  Forms are available at all police stations (including Meadowvale Town Centre) and all City facilities.

Community Safety Zones

These are areas that have been targeted for enforcement by Peel Regional Police.  They include intersections and roads that have high incidents of speeding or traffic violations.  All fines will be doubled in these zones.  The areas will be clearly signed by standard provincial signage.

Zebra Striped Crosswalks

Another program I have been involved in is the implementation of the new zebra striping at crosswalks.  These were installed in 2006 in pilot areas, two in Ward 9, and the results have been so positive we are expanding the use throughout the City.  I have also had the Region of Peel install them along with audible and countdown signals at Erin Mills and Eglinton.
